Two of the best teams in Heart of Iowa Conference girls basketball squared off Tuesday night (12/17) with Gilbert posting a 44-38 win over Roland-Story in Gilbert.
The loss was the first of the season for the Norse, ranked No. 5 in the state in Class 3A coming into the game. Gilbert is this week's No. 5 team in the Class 4A rankings. R-S is now 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the HOIC going into its final pre-Christmas game on Friday at Greene County.
Points were at a premium as Roland-Story and Gilbert hooked up in a defensive battle. The Norsemen led 7-6 at the end of the first quarter but trailed 17-13 at halftime.
The Tigers opened up their biggest lead of the night at 25-16 midway through the third quarter. The Norsemen trimmed the deficit to four points at the end of the third, 29-25. After the Norse closed within three points at 31-28 early in the fourth quarter, Gilbert regained control of the contest and built its lead to as many as eight points before closing out the six-point win.
Reagan Barkema scored 13 points and Juliann Clark 12 for Roland-Story. Clark also grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds.
