Norse knock off Ames, 4-2

Posted: 06/06/2009 - by Paul Clark

The improving Roland-Story softball team posted a big win Friday night at Bill Hennessey Field in Roland, downing Class 4A Ames by a 4-2 score.  The win lifted the Norse to 2-4 on the season with wins in two of their last three games.

R-S was hitless until the fourth inning in a scoreless game.  But the Norse bats came to life in the fourth and Roland-Story scored three times on four hits in the inning.  McKena Carlson and Rachel Hagedorn opened the frame with back-to-back singles.  After a McKenzie Neely sacrifice put runners at second and third, Kayla Nielsen lashed a double just inside the third base line to score both Carlson and Hagedorn and make it 2-0.  One out later, Dani Mott delivered an RBI single to score Nielsen.

Roland-Story added another run in the bottom of the sixth.  Hagedorn reached on a throwing error and eventually came home on an RBI single by Ashley Greff.  Ames scored twice in the top of the seventh to make it 4-2, but R-S pitcher Sarah Grimsley closed the door right there to get the complete game victory.

The Norse will be in tournament action at Belmond over the weekend.
