Coach Loots' 2009 season recap

Posted: 06/01/2009 - by Paul Clark

To start the season it was a little uncertain how things were going to go.  I had to fill three spots from last year and didn't know if I had three guys to fill those positions.  But early in the year I had guys step up and play well.  As the season went on I had a few more guys that were battling for varsity spots.  I gave those boys a chance in a few meets and they held their own.

So that is a good sign for next year as I lose Jordan Gustafson (#5 2A golfer in the state) and also Jon Braathun. Both these boys golfed varsity all year long.  Addison Witthuhn also golfed varsity but had to quit due to personal injury.  I will miss this year's seniors but in the same respect look foward to next year's challenges also.  This year's seniors are the three that I mentioned as well as Tom Christian- team jokester; Ben Seifert- mister consistent; and Ethan Marti- liked to have fun with Addison and Ben.

As for the underclassmen they have something to work on.  #6 in the state and only lose two guys on varsity so we should be back next year and the boys need to work on golf all summer and fall so we are ready next spring.

I had three boys on the All conference team (Jon Meyer, Jordan Gustafson, Kendall Gustafson). Meyer was sectional runner-up, Jordan Gustafson was district medalist and also 5th overall in 2A at state (1st team all-state).

Throughout all our duals I think we only had one meet where a RS kid wasn't medalist or tie for medalist.  That says a lot about our kids.  They take golf seriously.  They practice when we don't have practice due to rain, cold, and such.  They practice on the weekends, all summer, all fall. So they put in time other than during golf season.  We have had some trouble with gilbert the last couple years and again this year but it was nice to beat them when in mattered the most (districts).

At the state tournament things went okay on Friday as there were four boys on the team that had never played LPN Lake Panorama National before. They were all pretty optimistic that they would do better on Saturday and things just didn't go that way.  But that's a learning experience and they will work on that.  Like I said before I think that next year we can get back to the tournament as a few of the tougher teams had some seniors on the team.

I give the most dedicated award to the whole team as they all worked very hard and wanted to practice no matter the conditions.  The most improved award goes to Tanner Birchmier.

So to sum things up it was a great year, have a good group of kids coming back next year so we will see what we have coming into the program and will be ready for next year.  Thanks again to all the seniors, parents, Todd (Thorson), Paul (Clark), the Pattersons (Kevin & Peg) and the school for another good year and look foward to next year.
